Goals and Objectives: Postgraduate Year 1 (PGY1):
The goals of the PGY1 include:

To develop a foundation of internal medicine experience as a prerequisite for the study and practice of clinical neurology.

To gain experience in as many aspects of internal medicine, including critical care, cardiology, pulmonology, gastroenterology, etc.

To manage common inpatient pathologies, emergent and non-emergent, encountered in the field of internal medicine.
PGY1 Competencies:

Evaluate and manage common medical conditions found in patients with neurological diseases. Examples include urinary tract infection, aspiration pneumonia, diabetes mellitus, atrial fibrillation, etc.

Recognize when a patient has a neurologic disorder, attempt to localize the lesion, and develop a preliminary diagnostic and management plan.

Recognize when a patient has a neurological, psychiatric, and/or a neurosurgical emergency and obtain timely consultation.

Communicate with the various members of the health care team in a respectful and effective manner.
