EXPECTATIONS BY PGY

Goals and Objectives: Postgraduate Year 1 (PGY1):

 

The goals of the PGY1 include:

  • To develop a foundation of internal medicine experience as a prerequisite for the study and practice of clinical neurology.

  • To gain experience in as many aspects of internal medicine, including critical care, cardiology, pulmonology, gastroenterology, etc.

  • To manage common inpatient pathologies, emergent and non-emergent, encountered in the field of internal medicine.

 

PGY1 Competencies:

  • Evaluate and manage common medical conditions found in patients with neurological diseases. Examples include urinary tract infection, aspiration pneumonia, diabetes mellitus, atrial fibrillation, etc.

  • Recognize when a patient has a neurologic disorder, attempt to localize the lesion, and develop a preliminary diagnostic and management plan.

  • Recognize when a patient has a neurological, psychiatric, and/or a neurosurgical emergency and obtain timely consultation.

  • Communicate with the various members of the health care team in a respectful and effective manner.
